Birds and Cats

Updated: Apr 14, 2021

Cats enjoy watching birds. I appreciate this, however, after having squirrels chew through our siding to make a home inside our drafty old house I stopped feeding the "birds".

Willy the white cat and the cardinal.

Fast-forward many years. I had an abundance of beef fat and needed to clear out one of our freezers. I decided to make suet and bird feed cakes for the birds. I rendered the beef fat and mixed in an assortment of bird seed. I purchased a few suet cages to hang the beef suet bird feed cakes. Now I and the white cat watch the birds from the kitchen.

Rocky the rooster likes this as well. I toss small chunks of the cakes to the ground for Rocky to peck at.

I put the cakes into the suet cages and hung on the lilac close to our kitchen windows. This is the perfect spot to watch the birds from the kitchen table, and for Willy to watch birds from the counter.

The birds we've had are the Downy Woodpecker, Cardinal, Chickadee, Titmouse, and the Nuthatch.
