Between Winter and Spring

Maple sugaring is underway. The freeze–thaw cycle finally works in our favor and the sap begins to run. Early season syrup is lighter in color and flavor. Sugaring keeps us paying close attention to the temperature since the right combination of cold nights and warmer days makes the process work.

It’s still winter, but small changes are starting to show. The snow slowly shrinks at the edges and the days are getting longer. The weather can shift quickly from one day to the next.
When we get a mild day, I start thinking about pruning. The hydrangeas, blueberry bushes, and cherry tree will all need attention soon, but timing matters. Late winter is mostly about watching and waiting for the right window. For now, another round of snow has pushed that job a little farther down the list.

The patio wood racks are nearly empty, which is exactly how it should be. Burning through the last of the stacked firewood means the supply we prepared in the fall is almost used up. I look forward to carting in the last wagon full of wood for the season.

Inside, we’re still spending time cooking and baking. Meals tend to be simple and hearty this time of year. Bread baking continues, and a bacon cheddar sourdough turned out well enough that it will stay in rotation.
The biggest focus lately has been the RV. We leave New Hampshire the last week of March and head to Hilton Head Island for the month of April, so this is the time to make sure everything is ready.
Tom has been working through several maintenance projects at home. He replaced the DEF injector, installed new front brakes, replaced the rear camera, and handled several smaller repairs along the way. A motorhome has many systems and taking it in for service every time something needs attention can be expensive and inconvenient. Doing the work at home when possible makes sense. Tom made the mistake of having every tool known to mankind, so he has the ability to do everything.
We will be sharing more about RV maintenance and the projects we completed in an upcoming video.
Thanks for being here and following along with what we’re working on during this in-between season. Whether it’s maple sugaring, cooking and baking, or getting the RV ready for the road, we appreciate you taking the time to read and watch.
Some seasons are about travel. Others are about the work that makes travel possible.
We’re glad you’re along for the ride, sometimes literally and sometimes from home. We’ll keep sharing it as it unfolds.
