A Simple Road Trip Home

After another April on Hilton Head Island, it was time to point the motorhome north toward New Hampshire once again.

The trip home is never just a straight drive for us. Partly because long travel days have lost their appeal over the years, and partly because some of the best parts of RV travel happen in between the destinations themselves.

This year the road north included an overnight stay at Round Peak Vineyards in Mount Airy, North Carolina through Harvest Hosts, a peaceful stop at Walnut Hills Campground in Staunton, Virginia, a long-awaited visit to Polyface Farm, and one final overnight stop at Spirits Lab Distilling in Woodbury, New York before making the final push home.

Round Peak Vineyards turned out to be exactly the kind of overnight stop we enjoy these days. Quiet, scenic, and relaxed. We spent the evening sitting outside with a glass of wine overlooking the vineyard, watching the light change across the landscape while the motorhome sat parked just beyond the tasting room. Simple moments like that tend to stay with us longer than packed itineraries or tourist attractions ever do.

We spent a couple of nights at Walnut Hills Campground in Virginia, a green and peaceful campground that never felt crowded despite its size. After settling into the slower pace of Hilton Head for five weeks, it was a nice place to pause for a bit, sit by the pond, and gradually shift our mindset back toward home and routine.

One of the highlights of the trip was visiting Polyface Farm which has an "open door" policy. We explored the property and stocked up on meats and eggs from the farm store before leaving.  It is hard not to appreciate the amount of work, creativity, and energy that has gone into building something so unique over the years.

Once back at our tiny house, we cooked Polyface Farm ribeye in the cast iron skillet. It was the perfect way to end the day in the Virginia contryside.

Our final overnight stop before home was at Spirits Lab Distilling in Woodbury, New York. The tasting room sits on the upper floor of a large old barn overlooking the surrounding countryside, and it turned out to be a great place to spend the evening after another long travel day. The bartender kept the room lively, the setting was relaxed and welcoming, and for once we simply enjoyed the stop without worrying much about filming. Oddly enough, we never recorded a single video clip there, although we did manage to take a few photos. Sometimes not turning every moment into content is part of the balance too.

By the time we crossed back into New Hampshire, spring had finally started catching up with us. The grass needed attention, the gardens were waking up, and the familiar list of projects waiting at home was right where we left it. Bell was so happy to see her boyfriend Moses and they have been playing so hard that they were exhausted.

Life in the motorhome always changes our perspective a little. Smaller spaces, fewer distractions, and simpler routines have a way of reminding us that home has less to do with square footage and more to do with how you live. And somehow, after every trip, we come home appreciating both lives a little more.

As always, thank you for following along with our travels, videos, and stories. We truly appreciate everyone who takes the time to watch, read, comment, and travel alongside us, whether you have been here from the beginning or just recently found our little corner of the internet.
